Overview of Atheism
Who though that I would just present you with an empty page when you read the title of this article? Atheism is not that simple at all as the believe that there is no deity requires as much reasoning for the believe as any other religion where a deity is worshiped. Atheism means “no god” – a means no and theos is god.
Atheism in the broader term is the believe that no deity exists and also the skepticism of supernatural claims. Reasons for not believing in any deity include the problem of evil, that evil comes from within and is a consequence of free will, the argument from inconsistent revelations from various scriptures and the argument from nonbelief.
Other arguments for atheism range from the philosophical to the social to the historical. Although some atheists have adopted secular philosophies, there is no one ideology or set of behaviors to which all atheists adhere. Many atheists hold that atheism is a more parsimonious worldview than theism, and therefore the burden of proof lies not on the atheist to disprove the existence of God, but on the theist to provide a rationale for theism.
Are all nonreligious people Atheists? Absolutely not, but the opposite is true, that all Atheists are nonreligious although some would see themselves as spiritual. The Western world has a much higher percentage of Atheists than elsewhere, and reports shows that 2.3% of the world’s population are atheists, while a further 11.9% are nonreligious while rates of self-reported atheism shows United States (4%), Italy (7%), Spain (11%), Great Britain (17%), Germany (20%), and France (32%).
Although most Atheists would say they believe in no god, rather than being “against god,” there are generally two types of Atheists; firstly the active Atheists who are activists for their believe and right to believe that there is no god, and secondly the passive Atheists that plainly have no interest in anything related to religion or deities.
The Atheistic view has been much challenged by all kind of religious people from all kinds of religions. To be an Atheist would by default mean that you believe:
- Evolution – that the universe appeared out of thin air, as apposed to creation
- That moral and ethical code is an awareness that society created
- That right and wrong is personal preference
- That prophecy is guess work and coincidence
- That the spiritual world is imaginary
